Letterbe home screen: a greeting, the big “Scan letter” button, the next deadline and the list of your letters with deadlines and amounts. The app is shown in German.

How it works

Snap. Understand. Done.

Three steps, no manual needed. Letterbe takes the pain out of official jargon – you stay in charge.

  1. 1. Snap the letter

The scanner finds the edges and straightens every page, even for long letters. PDF files, such as an invoice from an email, work just the same.

  2. 2. Understand

Letterbe tells you who sent the letter, what it's about, what to do and by when. Sender, amount, deadline and IBAN are detected.

  3. 3. Get it done

Add deadlines to your calendar with a reminder in a single tap. For organisational replies, Letterbe prepares a draft; you check it and send it yourself.

What Letterbe does

Everything a letter wants from you – at a glance.

Bill, official notice or a note from school: Letterbe pulls out what matters and helps you deal with it on time.

Letterbe shows for an invoice: sender, what it's about, what to do, payment deadline, amount and customer number. The app is shown in German.

Understand

Who, what, by when.

Letterbe sums up every letter in plain words. What you need to do, how much and by when is right at the top – no officialese.

  • What to do, in one sentence
  • How long you should keep the paper
  • Warnings for typical scam signs and changed bank details
A letter with the section “Explained simply” in short, simple sentences and the buttons “Read aloud” and “Read whole letter”. The app is shown in German.

Explained simply

Officialese and difficult letters, explained simply – and read aloud.

If you like, Letterbe explains the letter in simple language. While it reads aloud, you follow along: the sentence being spoken is highlighted, like a subtitle.

  • Read aloud with your device's voices, even offline
  • Tap a sentence and Letterbe reads on from there
  • Large text and dark mode for relaxed reading
An English letter from an airline, below it the German translation with a note that the original letter prevails.

In your language

Letters translated into your language.

If a letter is in a different language from the one your app uses, Letterbe translates it and reads it aloud in your language. Ideal if you are still learning German – or get mail from abroad.

  • 9 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish and Turkish
  • On newer iPhones and iPads right on the device, too
  • The original letter always prevails
The deadlines overview: this week an invoice of 39.99 euros due 31 October, later a reply to the school due 6 November. The app is shown in German.

Get it done

Keep your deadlines in view.

Letterbe collects all deadlines in one place and adds them to your calendar, with a reminder, in a single tap. You see at once what is due this week.

  • Reminders through your own calendar
  • Reply drafts for organisational letters, which you check and send yourself
  • Find any letter instantly: just type what you're looking for

Stays with you

Your letters belong to you.

Letterbe is built so that as little as possible leaves your device – and nothing without your say-so.

  • No account, no sign-up

Start right away. No email address, no password, no customer account.

  • Stored on your device

Letterbe stores letters, photos and deadlines on your device, not on our servers. To move to a new device, use the encrypted backup.

  • The photo stays with you

Text is recognised on the device. If that ever fails, Letterbe asks before sending the photo.

  • Account numbers masked

Detected account numbers are masked automatically before analysis.

  • Analysis only if you say yes

The detailed analysis runs only with your consent, in real time on secured servers in the EU, and is not stored. Without consent, Letterbe works in basic mode on the device.

  • App lock and encryption

Lock the app with Face ID or fingerprint. Backups are encrypted with your own password.

  • Privacy of correspondence

Letterbe only captures letters addressed to the names you entered.

  • Take it with you

Export your letters as PDF and spreadsheet or as an encrypted backup.

All details, including which services are involved, are in the app privacy policy and in the FAQ.

Fair from the start

What you can count on.

Honest, clear and no catch – that's how an app for your mail should be.

  • Your letters stay readable – even without a subscription.

If your subscription ends, all saved letters remain readable and can be exported as PDF and spreadsheet.

  • Free really means usable.

3 new letters a month with all letter features – simple language, translation, read-aloud and deadlines included.

  • Family included.

You can manage a second person's mail in every plan, including the free version.

  • One subscription for phone and tablet.

Your subscription works on all devices with the same Apple ID or Google account, and also via Family Sharing on Apple devices.

  • You stay in control.

Letterbe never sends anything or makes payments on its own. You check and send replies yourself.

  • No sign-up, no ads.

No account, no ads in the app and no analytics tool tracking you.

Important: Letterbe explains what a letter says. Results are generated automatically and may contain mistakes; the original letter always prevails. Letterbe is not legal, tax or financial advice, does not calculate statutory deadlines and is not a government service.

¹ An analysis is the detailed explanation of a letter using artificial intelligence on a secured server in the EU – only with your consent. Your device detects dates, amounts and IBANs without it.

Prices for Germany, including VAT. Purchase and billing run through the App Store or Google Play; in other countries the store shows the price in your currency.

New customers can try both subscriptions free for 14 days. The subscription renews automatically and can be cancelled at any time in your Apple Account's subscription settings or in Google Play – with Apple, at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.

A subscription works on all devices with the same Apple ID or Google account. It cannot be transferred between Apple and Google.

Questions and answers

Good to know.

What is Letterbe?

Letterbe is an app for iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. You take a photo of a letter and Letterbe tells you in plain words who sent it, what it's about, what to do and by when.

Do I need an account?

No. Letterbe works without an account or sign-up. You only enter your name so that Letterbe recognises letters addressed to you.

Where are my letters stored?

On your device, not on our servers. If you have device backup switched on (iCloud Backup or Android backup), the data is part of that backup; we have no access to it.

To move everything to a new device, use the encrypted backup in Letterbe, protected with your password.

How does Letterbe analyse a letter?

Text is recognised on your device. For the detailed explanation, Letterbe uses artificial intelligence with your consent: the recognised text is sent encrypted to our server – with detected account numbers masked first – and analysed there in real time with Claude by Anthropic via Amazon Web Services in data centres in the EU. It is not stored.

On newer iPhones and iPads, translating and summarising also work right on the device. Without consent, Letterbe works in basic mode: your device detects dates, amounts and IBANs on its own.

Is this legal advice?

No. Letterbe explains what a letter says. Results are generated automatically and may contain mistakes; the original letter always prevails. Letterbe is not legal, tax or financial advice and does not calculate statutory deadlines. For important letters, an advice centre or a lawyer can help.

What does Letterbe cost?

With the free version, you can save 3 new letters a month with all letter features. Letterbe costs €5.99 per month or €59.99 per year, Letterbe Complete €8.99 per month or €89.99 per year (prices for Germany). New customers can try them free for 14 days. See pricing

What happens to my letters if I cancel?

They stay readable on your device and can be exported as PDF and spreadsheet. You can then add new letters within the free allowance again.

Can I manage my parents' mail too?

Yes, if you are allowed to – with their consent or as their legal representative, for example with a power of attorney or as their legal guardian. Add the second person in Letterbe. To protect the privacy of correspondence, Letterbe only captures letters addressed to the names you entered.

Does Letterbe send replies or pay bills?

No. For organisational replies, Letterbe prepares a draft that you check and send yourself. You make payments yourself as usual, for example in your banking app.

Which devices and languages are supported?

iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 27 or later, and Android phones and tablets running Android 13 or later. The app is available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish and Turkish.
